The Last Exorcism | First Date

Let me preface by saying, my date has been the first girl to never jump in a horror flick, tear skin off my arm, and yet, manage to laugh 30 minutes into the film. And she can fill out some Daisy Dukes.

That said: Eli Roth, you basterd, where’s the directorial magic gone… There may perhaps be a lapse of judgement, on my part; but for the first time I almost felt compelled to share the same reaction as my fellow movie goers: “Bullsh*t!

Is it a complete mess? No.

The character development is there. We’re given insight as to Cotton Marcus’ apprentice-ship as an exorcist at age 10, culminating with his present struggle of faith. There’s the Sweetzer family who are still shaken from the mother’s passing, and now pestered by the demonic entity defiling the daughter, Nell Sweetzer.

The film is simply split into Acts. I & II, but remains to have the elements for the perfect Stephen King novel, rather than a blockbuster hit.

Unfortunately, Paranormal Activity, will remain as “the horror movie of the decade” which managed to conjure up enough sleep deprived audience members, as did The Exorcist back in ‘73.

LIKES:

  • Cryptic demonology book passed down from Cotton’s father. (BONUS: It was a picture book!)
  • Scenes that seemed to be shot in the back roads of Cumming, GA, to get home.
  • Light on the blood-factor, especially for an Eli Roth film. LESS IS MORE.

DISLIKES:

  • Where were the scares? Everything scary had been shown on teasers and trailers; a habit in the last year that has lead to the disappointment of a couple films.
  • The End… however, I refuse to spoil it for anyone, I recommend the viewing, as it is a genuine horror movie that relies more of the psychological fears rather than gore drenched clips.
